7th Thailand International Guitar Festival 2007
Galina Vale (Vernigora)
Born in the Ukraine, Galina Vale (Vernigora) made her first public appearance on state television and began performing with the Kharkov Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra at the age of 8. She studied at the Moscow Gnesiny Music College while also employed as a principal guitarist with the Kharkov State Philharmonia. Winning prizes at competitions in Poland, Italy, Hungary, Spain and the U.K., Galina has performed in over 2000 concerts across Western and Eastern Europe.
In 1996, the British Ambassador and High Commissioner to Kenya invited her to Africa for a concert tour and television appearances. Her recitals have included very technically demanding works such as arrangements by Japanese virtuoso guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita of "The Bogatyr Gates of Kiev", considered "impossible for guitar", and her own arrangements of works such as Rachmaninov's "Prelude no.5 in G-minor" and Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance no.5".
Her repertoire ranges from renaissance and baroque orchestral and opera works to 'orthodox' (Sor, Mertz, Tarrega, Villa-Lobos), modern, flamenco and South American and Eastern European folk music. Her interpretation of pieces by famous guitarist-composer Stepan Rak inspired his praise, "finally I have found a guitarist who can perform my music!" She starred in 3 films in the Ukraine: "Portrait with Guitar" (1987); "Strings and Sails"(1991) and "Spirit of Spain" (1997).
Her first CD "The Legend" was released in 1996 and in 1997, she was featured on U.S. FM radio in the network edition of "Great Women Guitarists" produced by 'Classical Guitar Alive'. After moving to Manchester in 1997, Galina released two more CD’s “Hungarian Rhapsody” (1999) and “Great Gates of Kiev” (2002) and has since performed at major festivals including the “Eurowirral International Guitar Festival, Ripon Music Festival, "Hola Mundo" and in venues including, the Royal Festival Hall, Purcell Room, Kensington Roof Gardens, Leighton House and Bridgewater Hall. She has also worked with the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester and London performing Spanish guitar music programs for the Open University and the British Council.
Last year, Galina performed in Spain, Portugal, Turkey and Thailand.
